Abstract

The kroto weaver ant O. Smaragdina has economic value. However, on Tarakan Island, fulfillment of kroto needs is obtained from hunting/harvesting kroto from nature or without cultivation. The research was conducted on perpetrators of kroto, and local knowledge regarding kroto harvesting activities on Tarakan Island. Survey research was conducted through observations and in-depth interviews with respondents obtained using snowball sampling techniques. Furthermore, the data was analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the research show that 5 (five) people act as natural kroto hunters/harvesters on Tarakan Island. Meanwhile, 3 (three) people act as kroto collectors and sell them to be used as bird food and bait for anglers. Local knowledge of kroto harvesters is that they do not harvest all the kroto (not all nests are collected), collect with intensity every day, and move around a minimum cycle of +14 days. They will return to the tree that has been previously marked (previous harvest). Therefore, activities can still be continued, or the results show that the kroto harvesters on Tarakan Island have paid attention to the principles of sustainable use of kroto
