Abstract

Hyperglycemia is a condition characterized by blood glucose levels exceeding the normal range and is one of the main characteristics of Diabetes Mellitus (DM). Limited community knowledge regarding the risk factors, signs and symptoms, and prevention of DM may hinder efforts toward prevention and early detection. This activity aimed to analyze changes in community knowledge about DM before and after health education as an effort to support the prevention and early detection of hyperglycemia. The activity employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. A total of 78 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. The instrument used was a questionnaire assessing knowledge of DM, while random blood glucose testing was conducted as part of the screening process. The educational intervention covered the definition, risk factors, signs and symptoms, prevention, healthy lifestyle, and management of DM. The results showed that the mean knowledge score increased from 38.31 at the pretest to 56.23 at the posttest, with a mean difference of 17.92 points. The Paired Samples t-test demonstrated a statistically significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores (t = −16.050; df = 77; p < 0.001). Health education can serve as a promotive and preventive effort to improve community knowledge and raise awareness of the importance of early detection of hyperglycemia
