Laporan Kasus Akupunktur Pada Penderita Kelumpuhan Wajah Idiopatik di Praktik Mandiri “DH” Semarang

Abstract

Idiopathic facial paralysis is a unilateral facial paralysis that develops rapidly due to damage to the peripheral portion of the seventh cranial nerve, with the underlying cause remaining unknown in most cases. The facial nerve is responsible for facial muscle movement, parasympathetic functions, and taste sensation. This study aimed to determine the benefits of acupuncture care in a patient with idiopathic facial paralysis using appropriate acupuncture points. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed involving a single client, Mr. E, a 38-year-old man who presented with idiopathic facial paralysis and a complaint of facial deviation at the “DH” Independent Acupuncture Practice in Semarang. The treatment was administered in six sessions in November 2025. Data were collected through observation and interviews regarding the client's clinical progress. Acupuncture was performed at Fengchi (GB20), Fengmen (BL12), Dazhu (BL11), Yangbai (GB14), Taiyang (EX-HN5), Sibai (ST2), Dicang (ST4), Jiache (ST6), Yingxiang (LI20), Quanliao (SI18), Hegu (LI4), Zusanli (ST36), Touwei (ST8), and Baihui (GV20). After six treatment sessions, the facial deviation was no longer present, numbness in the left cheek had resolved, the face appeared brighter, and the client was able to gargle, chew food, and move his head freely. In conclusion, acupuncture was effective in supporting the recovery of idiopathic facial paralysis, which was attributed to the invasion of the Yang Ming and Shao Yang meridians by the cold-wind pathogen
