Abstract

The unmet need for family planning in North Sumatra Province is recorded to be higher than the national average. This condition has implications for an increased risk of unintended pregnancies, unsafe abortions, and elevated maternal mortality rates (MMR). This study aimed to analyze the determinants of unmet need for family planning in North Sumatra Province. The study employed an analytic design with a cross-sectional approach using secondary data from the 2023 Updating of the Family Data Collection (Pendataan Keluarga) conducted by BKKBN, involving 3,407 couples of reproductive age. Data analysis was carried out through univariate, bivariate analysis using the chi-square test, and multivariate analysis with multiple logistic regression. The results showed that the prevalence of unmet need was 19%. Variables significantly associated with unmet need (p<0.05) included wife’s age, wife’s employment status, husband’s education, number of living children, and exposure to information from both field workers and the media. The dominant factors influencing unmet need were wife’s age. It is recommended that the Ministry of Population and Family Development/BKKBN, local governments, and stakeholders strengthen communication, information, and education (CIE), optimize the role of family planning field workers (PKB/PLKB), enhance the utilization of media, and engage community leaders in efforts to reduce unmet need for family planning in North Sumatra Province
