Abstract

Choking is an emergency condition caused by foreign-body airway obstruction that can occur suddenly in children and requires immediate management. Schools are important settings for emergency preparedness because teachers interact directly with students during learning and other school activities. This community service activity aimed to improve the knowledge and preparedness of elementary school teachers in recognizing and providing first aid to children experiencing choking. The activity was conducted on September 9, 2026, at SD Negeri 01 Bambu Apus, Cipayung District, East Jakarta, involving 30 teachers. The methods included education on choking management in children, demonstration of first-aid procedures using a mannequin, and hands-on simulation involving participants. Knowledge was evaluated using pre-test and post-test assessments. The mean knowledge score increased from 72/100 (72%), categorized as moderate, before the intervention to 98.89/100 (98.89%), categorized as very good, after the intervention. The increase was 26.89 points, equivalent to a 37.35% increase relative to the baseline score. Education combined with demonstration and simulation provided teachers with a practical learning experience in understanding choking management in children. Similar activities should be conducted periodically to strengthen emergency preparedness in school settings
